  1. Study Skills

  2. Why are they important? • This class moves FASSSSSSSSST! • If you don’t believe me, ask someone who has taken it already. • Study skills are the one tool that will help you swim- if you don’t have them- you will sink • This is typically a 16 week course- this summer it is 10 weeks- you do the math 

  3. Bio 099 • Designed to prepare you for the fast-paced Anatomy and Physiology • Designed by an Anatomy instructor • You are expected to walk into Anatomy on Day 1 with a FULL understanding of concepts from Bio 099

  4. Bio 099 continued… • This course is also designed to help you with study skills as you strengthen yourself as a student. • That is why so much support is provided for you

  5. The Next Step • Correlations have been done between Bio 099 performance and performance in A & P • Students who earned As and Bs in Bio 099 were successful in A&P • Students who struggled to get a C- struggled even more in A&P • You must earn a C in this course in order to move onto A &P.

  6. Wendy Rappazzo • Designed Bio 099 • Teaches A & P • Her faculty webpage has practice quizzes, tests and lecture notes to supplement this course (mainly the Bio portion)

  7. What do I provide • powerpoints • http://Jzellers.wikispaces.com • Outlines • Questions

  8. Lecture Notes • Lecture Notes will only be provided for you on the first day of lecture • You are expected to print out your own after the first lecture • They are all loaded on http://jzellers. wikispaces.com

  9. Lecture Notes • Review Lecture Objectives before coming to class • This will give you an idea of what to expect during lecture

  10. Powerpoints • Printed versions of powerpoints will never be provided for you • Print out powerpoints ahead of time • When you go to print- • You have a few options- slides, handouts, notes or outline • Since I provide an outline- you may not need to print the outline format- but some students may find it helpful

  11. Printing Powerpoints • You can also chose how many slides per page • If you print 3 slides per page using “handouts” format- you will get nice pages that have note-taking lines next to the powerpoint slide.

  12. Review Questions • Review questions are typed on the lecture notes handout just below the outline • They are designed to help ensure you captured the main ideas from lecture • I suggest doing them after the lecture, but not directly after- perhaps before the quiz, before the hour exam or before the next day’s lecture

  13. Textbook • The Timberlake Chemistry textbook has a lot of practice questions • The end of each chapter has review questions and answers so you can check yourself

  14. Textbook • The Biology textbook supplement also has end of section review questions • There are no answers provided in those sections- but feel free to email me anytime if you have a question or ask the question before lecture the next day

  15. Internet • Go to www.google.com • Type in the concept you are looking for- for instance- “aerobic respiration” • You can type the word “animation” or “video clip” and you will get a ton of hits • This will be especially important in the Biology portion

  16. “Getting Ready for A&P” • Pages 2-11 are self-quizzes and descriptions to help you understand your learning style • Understanding HOW you learn is key to understanding the best ways to study • What works for one person- may not work for you

  17. Quality Study Time • Studying for 30 minutes 5 days a week is much more efficient than studying for 150 minutes the night before a test.

  18. ACTIVE STUDYING!!! • Questioning • Re-copying • Reciting • Making Concept Maps • Drawing- Copying Diagrams • Flow Charts
