STPL Pre -1987 • 1983 – 10 small branches and a bookmobile • Madisonville was a two room house • Libraries were part-time, open 3 days a week • “Black” branches closed in 1985 • Bookmobile retired in 1986 • Abita and Bush were the same as they are today • Buildings were first generation library buildings ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
FOLSOM BRANCH 1950 - 1987 ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
1983-1987 Building Plan • In response to quadrupling of population • Full time hours of operation • Two new large branches at Slidell & Covington (HQ) • Tripled the size of Mandeville Branch • New buildings at Folsom, Lee Rd, Madisonville & Pearl River • Restroom renovations at Abita, Lacombe & Bush branches ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Additions Since 1987 • New Lacombe Branch • Opened in 1993 • Modular building • Actually smaller than existing building • Pontchartrain Branch • Opened in 1993 • First rental facility • Response to growth in southeast Slidell ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Additions since 1987 (Cont.) • Causeway Branch • Opened in 1999 • Second rental facility • Response to growth in Mandeville • Mandeville Branch • New Restrooms in 1998 • New Roof ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Additions Since 1987 (Cont.) • Electronic Resource Center • Opened in 1999 • Rented facility at Koop Dr • Moved to Covington in 2002 • Headquarters Annex • Rented facility 2002 • Technical Services • Branch Run Depot • Maintenance Facility ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Jan as Director 1996 • Focus has been on core library business • Collection development • Books are not an endangered species: there will always be demand for a “book on the beach” • Magazines & Reference • Professional Staff • Adult & Children’s Programming • Avoiding getting lost in “trends” • Library is neither a bookstore nor a coffee house ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Lost Opportunities • Libraries need space for ART • Lack of Museums in St. Tammany • Display space has by necessity been given over to book shelves • Programs stunted by inadequate meeting space: • Romance Writers may have to move offsite • Overcrowded summer reading programs • No space available for teens to meet & interact ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Lost Opportunities (Cont.) • No room for a “Friends of the Library” gift shop and perpetual book sale. • Insufficient “relaxation” reading areas • Feeling of “airiness” and open sight lines ruined by additional shelves and electronic media. • No space available for study carrels • Not enough storage areas for staff equipment and supplies (Story kits in attic) ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
Lost Opportunities (Cont.) • Full shelves result in buying fewer volumes than we should • Full shelves result in “weeding” items we would like to keep ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
STPL today is a very strong parish library system with a wonderful collection, an excellent staff, and a community hungry for library services. It is a tremendous community resource that is constrained by its buildings. STPL TODAY ST. TAMMANY PARISH LIBRARY footer
