Attribute: Setting could be a real place. “His room was probably the neatest I’d ever seen in my life. It looked like you could run a white-gloved fingertip over any surface and never find one fleck of dust, with everything having a place and an order, from the CDs stacked alphabetically on the shelves over his bed to the way the towels were folded in the bathroom. It was the kind of place where you were conscious not to disrupt the neat vacuum lines on the carper or the perfectly plumped pillows..” Pg: 130 “This was Commons Park, the small grassy area in the center of our neighborhood, Lakeview. Besides the sandboxes it also had a swing set, one of those circular things you push real fast and then jump on-a kind of manual merry-go-round-and enough grass to play baseball or kickball. Cass and I spent most of the afternoons of our childhood at Commons Park..” Pg: 9 “it was a study, with ,with deep wood walls and red carpet, a huge desk sitting in front of several built in shelves, each of which was crowded with trophies, framed pictures and diplomas” Pg; 74 to 75
Attribute: Character are described as real people “My sister wasn’t a seer or a prophet, at least no at eighteen. What she was, was s student body president two years running, star right wing of the girls soccer ream )state champs her junior and senior year), and Homecoming queen. She volunteered chopping vegetables at the homeless shelter for soup night every Thursday..” Pg: 11 “Under the bright lights of the kitchen I could see the tiny imperfections of her face: small lines by her eyes, the uneven slope of her nose. These things were fascinating, and I found myself completely unable to stop staring at them.” Pg: 83 “she had on a short, pink dress and strappy high-heeled sandals, and her skin-thanks to her mother’s tanning bed-was already a deep brown. Her blond hair was down, curling over her shoulders, a pair of white sunglasses parked on top of her head. She looked so healthy and alive it was like she was almost sparkling, right there in front of me.” Pg: 198
Attribute: theme connects to real life situation “’look at me when I'm talking to you!’ Mr. Biscoe said, and right as he crossed my line of vision, his face now beet-red, he suddenly reached out and hit Rogerson, hard, across the temple. Rogerson’s neck snapped back reflexively, and he lifted a hand to shield himself. ‘When I say you are to be somewhere, you are there. Understood?’ Rogerson, hand over face, nodded. I felt my stomach turning. I wasn’t even sure I was breathing.” Pg: 85 “when he hit me, I didn’t see it coming. It was just a quick blur, a flash out the corner of my eye, and then the side of my face just exploded, burning, as his hand slammed against me. The noise it made was a crack, like a gunshot. And it wasn’t like in the movies, where the person stands there and takes it. I reeled back, hitting my head against my seat. My ears were ringing, my face flushed, and already, instantly I had tears in my eyes” Pg: 113 “there were come times-when things got bad-that I saw something flash across Rogerson's face, like he couldn’t believe what he’s done. Like he’d just woken up and found himself standing over me, fist clenched, looking down in disbelief at the place on my shoulder/arm/stomach/back/leg where he’d hit me. I wondered if he was thinking of his father, and the marks he’s left behind.” pg 189
Evaluation: • Sarah Dessen created this book; Dreamland. She did a very good job on her detailing and plot. It takes place in the modern world and goes into great detail on many peoples/couples struggles.
