  2. In the Shadow of War 1919 - 1920 • Economic depression followed war. • Loss of foreign markets = Jobs cut • Industry slow to reconvert to peacetime • Inflation • Strikes = ANTI-UNION SENTIMENT • Boston Police Strike: Governor Coolidge fires officers & brings in National Guard

  3. The Red Scare, 1919 - 20 Period of widespread fear of Radicals. Causes • Russian Revolution of 1917 • Left wing activism worldwide • Labor Unrest & Terrorist attacks here

  4. The Palmer Raids • Attorney General, A. Mitchell Palmer, is convinced of a communist plot against USA. • 10,000 radicals arrested, many deported • Violated civil rights

  5. Sacco and Vanzetti Case 1920-27 • 2 Italian Anarchists are accused of robbery & murder in Braintree, MA • The Judge & Jury convicted them mainly because of their political views • They were sentenced to death

  6. The men appealed the case in a higher court to no avail. • Leftists held rallies worldwide to protest the sentence. • The men were executed in 1927.
