  1. Welcome to Back-to-School Night Ms. Alison Sweeney asweeney@rbrhs.org missasweeney.weebly.com

  2. IB Math Studies • This course is a rigorous course in a survey of mathematics, where: • The primary focus is how math is related to other subjects of study and to the world around us. • Students develop the critical thinking skills to give them an appreciation and better understand natural mathematical phenomena and current events. • Students will study over a year period, culminating with the internal assessment project (6-12 pages) and the external two-day exam.

  3. Supplies Needed for the Classroom What your child will need in class EVERY DAY: • Notebook and Folder (or a 3-ring binder – I give a lot of worksheets so a binder is ideal) • Pencil or Pen • Their Minds • Ti-83 or Ti-84 Graphing Calculator

  4. Grading Policy • Homework/Classwork 15% • Homework will be given. Late work will be accepted at half credit for up to one week. I will not remind you to complete missed assignments. • We will be doing various assignments during class throughout each marking period. Classwork will be graded on participation and correctness. • Quizzes 35% • Quizzes will usually be worth between 25-35 points each (depending on length and difficulty). Mini Quizzes will be 15 points. Quizzes will be given more often than a test. They are used to tell both you the student and I the teacher where you are at understanding-wise with the material. PLEASE use them to study from. • Test/Projects 50% • Tests will be worth 100 points each. Projects can be worth one or two test grades, depending on the length and difficulty.

  5. Make Up Work • If your child misses an assignment, it is to be made up as soon as possible after they come back. I will mark the assignment as MISSING in the gradebook until it is made up. This is a motivator to make up all work that missed. • Tests/Quizzes will also be marked as MISSING until made up. This may drastically change your child’s grade but again, it is a motivator to make the test up. If a week passes and the test is still not made up, a phone call/email will be sent home to the parent. • I will be posting all homework assignments and notes on my website.

  6. Internal Assessment • This is a short mathematical exploration completed individually by each student (usually 6-12 pages). • The emphasis is on mathematical communication, including formulae, diagrams, and mathematical processes, about a topic of the student’s choice. • The topic should have meaning to the student and is an element of the grading scheme. • The Internal Assessment is scored internally, and monitored externally by IB. • Worth 20% of the Final IB exam grade.

  7. External Assessment • External Assessment– Paper 1 (40%) – Paper 1 is a 1.5 hour assessment consisting of 15 compulsory short-response questions designed to cover the full syllabus of the course. In order to receive partial marks, students must show their work, although full marks are awarded even if work is not shown. You are allowed to use TI-83+/84 for the assessment. Scheduled for May 2015. • External Assessment – Paper 2 (40%) - Paper 2 is a 1.5 hour assessment consisting of 5 compulsory extended response questions designed to cover the full syllabus of the course. You are allowed to use TI-83+/84 for the assessment. Scheduled for May 2015. More information on the IB Final Assessment can be found at www.ibo.org.
