  6. Clear Expectations • Students are to arrive to school ON TIME • Students come to school prepared with pencil, paper and a silent reading book/eReader at a minimum • Students complete homework assignments and turn them in on time. • Students respond in complete sentences and supported thought, both orally and written.

  7. Clear Expectations (cont.) • MOST IMPORTANTLY- Behavior mirrors how we would like our students to behavior to be productive members of society. No where in the world is is favorable or acceptable to: • Speak disrespectfully • Act rudely to peers and/or adults • Bully • Steal • Lie • Cheat • Call out/side talk in public locations where that behavior negatively affects the good of the group.

  8. Strategies and Skills THE STRATEGIES Monitor Connect Questioning Inferring Determine importance/purpose Summarize

  9. Strategies and Skills EXAMPLES OF SKILLS Understanding characters motives Identifying the purpose of text features Determining Meaning of unknown words with context clues Identifying plot pattern Understanding text organization Etc…

  10. Generating Quality Responses • Student must get in the habit of focusing and answer the question as it is stated without jumping to a connected thought then answering. This causes them to include unrelated pieces of information. Oddly, this means to compartmentalize WHILE connecting to the outside world. • Students must get in the habit of qualifying their response with the appropriate evidence from the text. Use direct quotations when siting text evidence. This is your proof

  11. Generating Quality Responses (cont.) • Students must get in the habit of applying their prior knowledge and being clear and concise when including this information in their responses. • STUDENT EXPOSURE AND CONVERSATIONS ABOUT THE WORLD IN EVERYDAY LIFE IS KEY!!! TALK TO THEM AND LET THEM TALK TO YOU!

  12. A Word about PARCC • The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) is a group of 49 states working together to develop a common set of computer-based K–12 assessments in English language arts/Literacy and math linked to the new, more rigorous Common Core State Standards (CCSS).

  13. However… • This is the transition year, so although you will hear much talk about PARCC we will still be taking the MSA this year due to federal NCLB requirements of annual state assessments. • PARCC is set to roll out 2014-15.

  14. Common Core Shifts for ELA/Literacyyou can expect to see this year • Complexity: The standards require regular practice with complex text and its academic language • Evidence: The standards emphasize reading and writing grounded in evidence from text, both literary and informational • Knowledge: The standards require building knowledge through content rich non-fiction
