Industry Directions • Large OEM’s are divesting themselves of electronics manufacturing • Electronic Manufacturing Service (EMS) Co’s. are now predominant assembler of electronics • As manufacturing disappears, so does development • EMS companies becoming design and development centers for Electronics Manufacturers • EMS companies are building development staffs, albeit slowly as they become “full service” suppliers (e.g. design, build and field support). • Margins are thin; much less engineering support than OEMs used to have • Manufacturing is moving off-shore, and development with it • EMS companies are international, so staff buildup is world-wide
An Outreach Program To the EMS • EMS are probably the largest single employer of packaging engineers and technologist’s. • EMS staff are at best minimal participants in the IEEE CPMT. • We need a program to encourage the EMS’s to participate directly and or support their staff to participate in the IEEE CPMT.
An Outreach Program To the EMS • Develop Informational for the CTO of the EMS. Develop Direct Contacts with the CTO. • What are the benefits to an EMS in directly supporting the IEEE CPMT? • What are the benefits to an EMS supporting their staff joining the IEEE CPMT?
EMS Engineer Benefits • Benefits for EMS engineers • Same for OEMs • Professional publications • Recognition & Awards • Reputation – personal and corporate • Professional growth • Insight into what others are doing • Visibility into University activities • Contact with standards bodies
EMS Benefits • Benefits for EMS company • Industry insight into technical competence • Build reputation through Staff publications • Visibility to customers and potential customers • Understanding of competition • Work with standards bodies
