Lambton County by the Numbers • Total population of 123 995 • 3002sq/km • 11municipalities • 3 First Nations communities • 12 345 immigrants (10% of pop.) • 575 arrived since 2006 (5% of imm. pop.)
Who is Missing? • In 2011, 1004 permanent and temporary residents came to Sarnia-Lambton • This is a 32% increase from 2010
Background of LIP • Settlement Strategy developed in 2010 • 12 strategies organized under five areas of focus: • Employment • Settlement • Language & Communication • Coordination of Services • Public Awareness
Background of LIP • Strategy 4:Increase and promote opportunities to engage immigrants and newcomers in the community • 4.3. Establish rural outreach program for immigrants outside of Sarnia
Rural Outreach Working Group • Sub-committee of LIP Council • Formed in 2011 • Objectives: • Complete profile of immigrants outside of Sarnia • Create connections and partnerships • Investigate program models for rural outreach • Facilitate the development of or support existing outreach programming
Rural Outreach Working Group Findings: • Current service provision is limited • Supports arise on ad hoc basis and are volunteer driven • Majority of supports focused on migrant worker population • Rural communities are welcoming of immigrants (and open to strategies to attract them)
Rural Supports for Immigrants Library Services for Immigrants • Books, CDs & DVDs in multiple languages • Study materials for learning English (including online program Byki) Settlement Services Outreach • Both settlement agencies use space at various branches to meet with clients and provide information
Rural Supports for Immigrants Supports for Migrant Workers • Welcome Booklet for Migrant Workers developed and distributed • Presentations at monthly Mass for workers in Watford • Labour Day picnic for Thai and Spanish speaking workers
Rural Supports for Immigrants Ontario Immigrant Network • Pilot project to attract immigrant entrepreneurs to Lambton County through business succession • Funded by Ontario Trillium Foundation
Information Dissemination • Findings and outcomes have been added to Newcomer Portal under ‘Rural Resources’ • Presentations made to all 10 municipal councils outside of Sarnia
