The Rise of the Turks • Abbasids, through powerful, constantly struggled to maintain control of their empire. • Spain broke away in 756, six years after the Abbasid came to power. • Finally in 945, Persian armies moved into Baghdad and put an end to the power of the caliph, an Islamic religious or political leader. • Caliph was still the religious leader, but lost all political power.
The conquering Seljuks • Chinese records in early 1300’s mention a people called the Tu – Kiu living west of the borders, this is believed to be the Turks. • Herded goats and sheep, lived in tents, and used two – humped camels to carry their goods. • Abbasid took note of the Turks for their military skills. • Bought Turkish children as slaves, trained than as solders, and employed as bodyguards.
The conquering Seljuk • In the tenth century, Turks were converting to Islam and migration into the weakened Abbasid Empire. • One group was the Seljuks, who grew in number and strengthen. • In 1055, attacked and captured Baghdad from the Persians. • Seljuk sutans marched on the Byzantine Empire, and crushed the Byzantine defenders.
The Turks secure Persian Support • Seljuk rulers wisely courted the support of their newly conquered Persian subjects. • Favorable treatment made the Persians loyal supporters of the Seljuk. • The Turks often appointed them as government officials. • Vizier: Prime Minster • First being Nizam Al – Mulk, a Persian.
The Turks Secure Persian Support • The Turks also showed a great administration of Persian learning. • Seljuks arrived in Southwest Asia illiterate and learned cultural and religious guidance. • Supported the Persian artists and architects and built splendid mosques. • Completely removed Arabia language from the Persia.
