We Need Women Leaders From the Sandbox to the Corner Office: Valuable Leadership Lessons EveTahmincioglu,columnist/blogger, MSNBC.com and MSN.com
Why? • Good Ol’ Boys Network: Discrimination, both conscious and unconscious • History: It’s just how it’s always been • Uninspired: Women just don’t want it • Fear: Women don’t think they deserve it • Mommy Track: Family obligations weigh heavily on women
How do women leaders make it to the top? My research: • “From the Sandbox to the Corner Office” - interviewing 55 men and women top executive, 40 percent women. • Long-time contributor to the New York Times “Boss” column. • Writer for BusinessWeek, St. Petersburg Times, Women’s Wear Daily, UPI, Time • “Your Career” columnist for MSNBC.com
This is what they don’t do 1. They never ask for help. 2. They are unable to block out negative vibes and allow people to bring them down. 3. They are unable to sing their own praises. 4. They are lazy. They expect other people to put in the long hours so they can look good and take time off.
The Fantastic Four • Mentoring • Positivity • Self cheerleading • Workhorses
HELP! MENTORING: They seek out and accept help
Mary Callahan Erdoes, CEO, JP Morgan Private Bank Christie Hefner, former CEO of Playboy
Don’t bring me down POSITIVITY: They have the ability to block out negative vibes and naysayers
Linda Dillman, former CIO of Walmart Christine Jacobs, CEO Theragenics
Toot your horn SELF CHEERLEADING: They learned how to sing their own praises and ask for what they deserve
It was never too hard WORKHORSES: They put in the hours, the blood, sweat and tears to make it happen
And finally… The bad word? AMBITION!
