Primary Source • Pg 509-514 • George Pullman’s Palace Car Company and ”model” community near Chicago were severely affected by the depression following the Panic of 1893. In response to the decreasing demand for railroad cars, the Pullman Company reduced its work force, shortened the workweek, and decreased wages by 25 percent but refused to lower rents in the company-owned community of Pullman.
