Born October 14, 1644 & Anglican family • At 22 years old he became a religious member of the Society of Friends/ Quakers • Quakers= every man deserves to be treated equally & God is your only ruler • In 1668, Penn was imprisoned • Penn became best friends with George Fox • George Fox = minister William penn
Penn heard about the New World & Quakers heading over • Wanted to est. a refuge for Quakers persecuted • Charles II gave Penn a piece of land in the colonies in Jan., 1681 • In Oct., 1682 they arrived in “New Wales” • Purchased land from Indians • Made unofficial treaty Founding of pennsylvania

By 1684 slaves were at work. • Manufactured: • Iron, guns, & powder • Industries: • Textile products at home • Printing, publishing, & papermaking • Abundance of slaves (negroes) • By 1700, 1 in 10 Phils. owned slaves • Indentured Servants from Europe • Pennsylvania had 1st hospital, library & insurance company • By 1776 the colony’s commerce was worth millions of dollars economy
