  2. Our national organization… • 100,000 members • 1300 Branches • 500 College & University partners • Both women and men

  3. Who are we? Friends sharing a common purpose…

  4. Promoting equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change

  5. Where we have come from… Founded in 1881 in Boston We recently celebrated our 125th birthday!

  6. We have had many highlights… Our founders envisioned an organization of women college graduates to open the doors of higher education to other women.

  7. Child labor laws • Compulsory education • Establishment of juvenile courts • Funding of public schools and libraries By 1900 our group would advocate for…

  8. 1917… College women are first to picket the White House over the right to vote. *In 1920 women gained the right to vote.

  9. 1920… Nobel Prize-winning scientist Marie Curie receives $156,413 from AAUW members toward the purchase of one gram of radium.

  10. 1946… AAUW is accorded permanent United Nations observer status.

  11. 1953… AAUW supports the first federal legislative proposal for pay equity in a year when a woman working full time, year round makes an average of 65 cents to every dollar earned by a man.

  12. 1969… The Educational Foundation launches the Coretta Scott King Fund, providing opportunities for black women to study African American history and culture, social change, and peace.

  13. 1972… AAUW is instrumental in the passage of Title IX, co-authored by AAUW member Rep. Patsy Mink (D-HI) prohibiting sex discrimination in schools receiving federal funds.

  14. The AAUWLegal AdvocacyFund provides funding and support for women in higher education seeking judicial redress for sex discrimination. 1981

  15. 1988… Sandra Day O'Connor becomes the first woman appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court. In 1988 she receives the AAUW Achievement Award.

  16. 1993 After seven years of support from AAUW and work by its Lobby Corps, the Family and Medical Leave Act passes.

  17. 1995 AAUW launches the Voter Education Campaign.

  18. 2005 Harvard University President Lawrence Summers claimed that women's lack of commitment was the cause of their lack of presence in the highest positions on campus. AAUW launches into action.

  22. Our Educational Foundation… Provides fellowships, scholarships and grants to further women’s education. Adirondack Branch Scholarship Winner 2007 Mary Ellen Stockwell

  23. Our foundation has produced many publications relating to equity issues…

  24. Our Legal Advocacy Fund… Assists women fighting sex discrimination in higher education. *Case support for sexual discrimination *Public Education on Campus and in the community *Network of volunteer attorneys

  25. The nation’s largest legal fund focused solely on this issue.
