Challenges associated with supporting children of offenders • No identification systems in place. • Stigma. • Awareness about needs of children affected by parental offending. • Knowledge about available support. • Information sharing. • Lack of policy recognition and/or guidance. • Available resources. • Multi-agency working.

Practice example: Champions Schemes Examples of Champions Schemes: • Bristol Children’s Centres (as part of a wider Children Affected by Parental Imprisonment city-wide strategy) • Wiltshire Schools (initiated by HMP Erlestoke) • Birmingham Schools Children of Prisoners’ Pledge (Education Psychology Service with Barnardo’s Invisible Walls) • Somerset School and Early Help Champions

Somerset School Champions Proposed outcomes: Children and their carers affected by a family member offending… • Know who to talk to, to gain support and information in their school. • Know that they can speak to someone in their school that they trust and will understand their situation and not judge them. • Have access to and information about universal and targeted support, services and resources. • Feel included, listened to and understood by their school community. FLP schools… • Have school cultures that recognise and understand the needs of children affected by family members’ offending. • Work together and with other agencies to make sure we are trained to effectively support families affected by offending.

  7. Terms of reference for Somerset Champions • Attend 1-day Hidden Sentence training course. • Be a member of the national i-HOP service. • Be identified point of contact for CAPO. • Be identified point of contact for staff who require info, support or guidance re. CAPO. • Be identified point of contact for external agencies to share practice and guidance re. CAPO. 6. Provide non-judgemental, sensitive and informed support and information to CAPO.

  8. Terms of reference for Somerset Champions continued… 7. Raise awareness about needs of CAPO across school community where appropriate. 8. Attend 3 Champion Group meetings per year. • Lead on the implementation of Champions Action Plan in their school. 10. Be aware of how work with CAPO sits within the overarching behaviour and vulnerability strategies, policies and guidelines.

  9. Sustaining the model • Resourcing the model. • Engaging motivated and informed staff. • On-going support, co-ordination and review of model. • Integrate model into wider multi-agency, strategic framework with clear governance/accountability structures in place.

  10. Champions in the North-East? • In which agencies? • Who might co-ordinate this work? • Which wider strategic frameworks might a Champions model sit within? • What are the resource implications?
