    2. America and After School Programs Public schools are the largest provider of after school programs. In 2005 40% of K-8 students participated. The parents of 30 percent of children not currently participating say they would enroll their child in an after school program if one were available.

    3. Purpose of After School Programs 14.3 million children go to an empty house and are unsupervised after school. Youth are at the highest risk of being a victim of violence between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The peak hour for juvenile crime is from 3 to 4 p.m.

    4. Cont’d. Teens who are not in after-school programs are 37 percent more likely to become teen parents. Teens who do not participate in after school programs are nearly three times more likely to skip classes or use marijuana or other drugs After school and in the evenings, children watch, an average of 23 hours of TV per week.

    5. Benefits Children who participate in after-school programs behave better in class, handle conflict more effectively, and are more cooperative with authority figures and their peers. Students who spent even one to four hours a week in extracurricular activities are 60 percent less likely to have dropped out of school by 12th grade. Studies indicate that students in after-school programs show better academic achievement.

    6. Issues with After school Programs Funding! Where does it come from? According to a 2006 survey, less than half of after school programs say their funding is secure for the next two years and just 1 in 5 has secure funding for the next three to five years. School interruptions Accountability? Volunteers? Transportation especially in low SES areas.
