The development of EI within PDP provision. Getting to know more about you.
The aim of this session is to: • Introduce students to the concept of Emotional Intelligence • Work with a tool to assess an individuals EI • Help students work together to identify their skills • Encourage students to select areas of EI they would like to develop
What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)? • An important predictor of success • The capacity: • For recognising your own feelings and those of others • For motivating yourself • For managing emotions effectively in yourself and others • An emotional competence is a learnt capability that contributes to success in ALL aspects of life
Your EI competencies are the abilities that will help you: • Work out what you want from life • Decide upon the learning that will help you get there • Draw on your own resources to learn effectively • Learn from individuals around you – their successes and challenges • Learn with others in teams • Support your friends and peers in their learning
Research evidence from student populations • Links have been established between • EI and academic achievement • EI and social life • EI and smooth transition from school to University • Therefore personal, social and academic benefits of EI for students at University
What does the ECI-U cover? • It will guide you through steps to enable you to: • Identify what you want from your learning • Reflect on your EI competencies and how to support your learning • Profile your abilities • Plan your future development
Task 1. • Completing the EI self assessment. • How to complete the measure • Confidentiality • How to score the measure
Task 2 • Working in small self selected groups • What are you good at? What EI skills do you use regularly? • Identify one skill from your profile and think of an example of where/when you use this
Task 3 • Working in the same small groups • Identify what areas of EI are just not important for you at this point in time • Remember, that you don’t need to be good at everything!
Task 4 • Still in the same small groups • Identify one or two skills you think you would like to use more often
Task 5 and beyond! • How are you going to develop these skills? • Talk to your group – if anyone has this skill what do they do? • Use the workbook [if provided with your tool] • Would a buddy system work for you? • Would a diary help?
Final thoughts • You all have skills which you use everyday. • Be proud of these skills – don’t just take them for granted. • Everyone is different so it is not helpful to compare yourself against other people. • Development is a long term process and should be done at your own pace.
