A Nation Divided • Sectionalism – Excessive loyalty to one’s local section and issues • Republican Party formed in 1854 – ultimate goal…to stop the western spread of slavery • Tariff – tax placed on imported/exported goods (would benefit the North) • Southerners depended upon foreign trade and slave labor • States’ rights – the debate of how much power federal government should have
Presidential Election of 1860 • Democratic Convention – erupts in debate over issue of slavery Southern delegates leaving in protest, but they nominate Stephen A. Douglas • Those that left meet and nominate VP John C. Breckinridge • Republican Convention – nominate Abraham Lincoln • PREDICT – What will a split party do to the election?
Election of 1860 cont. • Southerners threaten to secede if Republican is President. • Constitutional Union Party – (Another new party! Goal-Keep Union together!) nominates John Bell • Trying to keep any candidate from getting the votes (THINK SURVIVOR!) H.O.R. would choose the president
Election Results • Texans voted in great numbers for Breckenridge. • Bell received some votes and Douglas received even fewer votes. • Lincoln did not receive any in TEXAS as his name was not on the ballot. • Lincoln wins the Northern vote and becomes #16.
Reaction to Lincoln • South Carolina secedes announcing, “The Union is dissolved.” • Within 6 wks, 5 other states join to create the CSA (Confederate States of America). • Texans ask for a convention to discuss secession, but Houston says NO. • Houston tries to call special meeting of legislature, but they override him.
Secession Convention of TX • Delegates vote to adopt an ordinance of secession 166 to 8. • Most Texan citizens vote in support of it. • Constitution was changed to the CSA. • Texas secession became official March 2, 1861. (7th state to secede) • Houston refuses to take the oath w/the governor’s seat declared vacant.
