  2. About The Teachers Mrs. Bemis Miss Klebosky Mrs. Carr Miss Thompson Mrs. Dobyns Miss Featherstone Miss Nelissen The team brings 78 years of combined teaching experience to your children.

  3. Reading • CKLA (Core Knowledge Language Arts) Arizona State Standards • Systemic & Explicit daily lessons to teach students how to read and write • Phonics approach • -blending through the whole word • Non-decodable words are called “tricky words” • - memorized/remembered

  4. Math Ready Classroom Mathematics This program engages students in purposeful sharing of mathematical ideas, reasoning, and approaches using varied representations. Along with this program there is a technology piece called I-Ready. Students will be able to access this through the Kyrene web page.

  5. Writing • Writing is taught as a process. • We focus our teaching and grading of both narrative and expository writing. • Your child will grow as a writer by learning to use: • Thinking Maps • Topic Sentences • Key details • Closing sentences

Sanford Harmony • Sanford Harmony is a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum designed to build strong classroom communities through intentional relationship building. • Through daily meetings named, Buddy Ups and weekly lessons named, Meet Ups all students are included, engaged, and learn to respect one another and value one another as important learners and problem solvers. A Typical Day in First Grade • Morning Procedures (unpack, attendance, pledge) • Reading • Recess (Please send your child a snack to eat) • Health, Science, and/or Social Studies • Specials • Computer Lab PE • Art Library • Music * S.t.e.m. Lab • Lunch • 11:15-11:35 cafeteria * Student Lunch Price $2.90 • 11:35-11:55 recess • Math • Writing • Pack up

  9. 1st Day of school * Parents are welcome on playground * Meet me on line 45 * First Bell Rings by 7:25 a.m. * Bring a snack (Please no peanuts) * Please have a lunch plan * Send your child with a labeled water bottle (Only Water) * Be sure I know how your child is going home

  10. 1st grade Ambassadors A 5th grade student has been assigned to help our class at the beginning and the end of the day. During morning drop off, ambassadors will be stationed at the playground gate to help walk first graders to their lines. They will help us with pack up and dismissal. Your teacher will periodically send book club flyers home. If you would like to order books your teacher will provide you with a classroom access code so that you can order books online. BRISAS READ-A-THON • Help Brisas Build Better Readers! • Our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year with a goal to raise $40,000!! • Reading starts September 4th-September 13th • Daily incentives, exciting prizes, grade-level raffles, and fun events! • Prizes for ALL students who participate!! • No minimum amount required to participate • 100% of all money received goes directly to help Brisas • Goal is to raise money to fund many school programs • Read-a-thon packets go home with students September 4th Sponsored by the Brisas PTSO Please email darya.mcclain@gmail.com with any questions.
