Strategic Planning forLGBT Inclusion in the Curriculum Ronni Sanlo, Ed.D. Director Emeritus UCLA LGBT Center ronnisanlo@gmail.com
Explanation of my Process • Full day minimum experience • Share visible/invisible identities of each participate for diversity inclusion • Lots of writing on cards, paper, walls • Pool information and vote for consensus Today is a taste of the process to help you move forward
Why strategic planning? We often lack the flexibility to deal with unexpected changes in the environment, in society, and on campus.
So we miss potential innovation and opportunities because nobody challenged organizational assumptions and ideologies.
So, we start here… • Long term • Uncertain • Divergent • Incomplete • Beyond linear
Whatever takes you away from conventional thinking is good! Emerging Issues
Need to look for emerging issues • at the horizon • realm of the weird and whacky • at the periphery • look for thought leaders and rebels • Any useful idea about the future should appear to be ridiculous! • But really…
If you’re looking for new ideas, don’t talk to normal people!
Three large questions! What effect will the changing landscape in higher education have on the role and purpose of the curriculum at Weber State? How do you know if Weber State faculty, students, and community are ready for LGBT inclusion in the curriculum? Is the faculty ready, willing, and able to do the work required for LGBT inclusion… …and, really, what is that work?
5-Step Process to Strategic PlanningSanlo, Rankin & Schoenberg, (2002). Our Place on Campus: LGBT Programs & Services in Higher education. Westport, CT: Greenwood Press
SWOT: the landscape of change • Strengths and Weaknesses: usually INTERNAL • Opportunities and Threats: usually EXTERNAL
Assignment:SWOT Teams 1 = strengths 2 = weaknesses 3 = opportunities 4 = threats • Areas to consider: • LGBT Curriculum Content • Supporting LGBT Research • Classroom Management • Community Response • Institutional Response
Step 1: VISION In a perfect world, what does inclusive curriculum content in your area look like? Who are you as faculty? (NOT what you do) Assignment: Write your vision then share it with your table. One sentence only.
Step 2: MISSION: WHAT YOU DO What are the broad overarching goals of inclusive curriculum at Weber State? Assignment: write a mission statement, share with your table two sentences only
Step 3:The BIGsteps toward accomplishing your mission and vision
Curriculum goalsmight be… Goal I. Reach for National Prominence Goal II. Attract and Graduate Outstanding Students Goal III. Attract, Develop, Retain Distinguished Faculty Goal IV. Discover, Share Apply New Knowledge Goal V. Nurture Diversity of Thought, Culture, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race, Ethnicity
Assignment: Create two big goals for the course you teach
Step 4: OBJECTIVES …are the steps you take to accomplish your goals.
Goal V. Nurture Diversity of Thought, Culture, Gender, Sexual Orientation, Race, Ethnicity Objective 1. Improve the climate for diversity by creating an inclusive and safe classroom environment Objective 2. Research and include inclusive material into the course content. Objective 3. Encourage students’ research in an inclusive content area
Assignment: select one of your goals and create three objectives to meet that goal for the course you teach
Step 5: Organizational Responsibilities • Who does what? • How do you learn what you need to know? C. What are the specific responsibilities of the department? Of each faculty? D. Are the responsibilities reasonable for the appointments? (part-time, full-time) D. How might you as faculty work with the campus LGBT office to enhance your teaching?
Strategic planning • It’s kind of tricky • Goals may be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time-bound…or • big, hairy, and audacious • Mission may be inspirational for some • vision may be inspirational for others • May take place over many months of processing or just a day
