Performance • During 2011, the last year of the TAKS test, 100% of Helms Fourth Grade Dual Language Students met state standards on the Spanish TAKS Writing Exam. • According to the Battelle For Kids, Value-Added report that HISD uses to rate schools, for Fall of 2012, Helms scored 13th out of 175 HISD elementary schools in academic growth.

International Spanish Academy • Helms is an International Spanish Academy We have a relationship with the Spanish Consulate -We host a Spanish Language and Cultural Assistant each year. -The school receives authentic educational materials from the Spain -Students are given the opportunities to earn a certificate that recognized both here and in Spain. -There are opportunities for study abroad.

THE DAILY FIVE Literacy Instruction • A way of structuring reading instruction so that every student is engaged in meaningful literacy tasks. • Students receive explicit whole group instruction and then are given independent practice time to read and write independently while the teacher provides focused instruction to individuals and small groups.

Helms Elementary Vanguard Neighborhood Program Outline • Students receive instruction daily from a Gifted and Talented (G/T) trained teacher in the four core content areas language arts, math, science, and social studies. • Emphasis on advanced level products using the Independent Investigative Model (IIM) and the Texas Performance Standards Project (TPSP)

Independent Investigative Model (IIM) • Step 1: Topic: Deciding What to Study • Step 2: Goal Setting: Making a Plan • Step 3: Research: Discovering Many New Facts • Step 4: Organizing: Putting It All Together • Step 5: Goal Evaluation: Checking on What Was Accomplished • Step 6: Product: Creating Something to Show What Was Learned • Step 7: Presentation: Shared the New Knowledge

Wetlands • Our Wetlands has been in existence for 12 years and is a Texas Registered Wetland • The area is in the process of revitalization through a collaboration with the University of Houston Clearlake and a committee of community members and parents. The goal of this committee is to maintain and improve this environment which includes the wetlands, pond environment and native plant and animal species.

  15. We provide after school programs from 3:30 – 6:00 pm These after school clubs are offered on a sliding scale. Before school care is also provided for a weekly fee. After School Program

  16. After School Program • Snacks are provided. • Students self-select their clubs according to interest. • The clubs offered include: Athletics (soccer, karate), Music (Band, Mariachi, Drumline), Visual and Performing Arts (Media Literacy, Hip-Hop Dance), Homework assistance

  18. Magnet Application Process • Parents turn in applications by January 11, 2013 • Helms calls the parent for Pre-IPT language testing of the child. Some other magnets and Vanguard Magnets also do Gifted and Talented testing at this time. • Students names are put into a lottery. Weight is given as follows: Siblings, In-Zone, Out-of-Zone, Out-of-District. • Parents are informed of acceptance/waitlist by US mail postmarked 3/22/2013. • Parents need to accept (one school only) by 4/5/ 2013
