  4. Then the next best thing to drawing maps themselves is to teach your grotto how to draw maps and watching your grottos fill with new excited mapmakers and your newsletters fill with excellent maps

  5. Planning a Grotto Cartography Class – Scope of the class • Teach survey classes separate from cartography class • Survey is different from cartography, and takes a different set of skills. Survey is better taught in the field in a one day course • Teach sketching courses as well as cartography • Like above Sketching is a different skill then cartography, although the two are very closely linked. In fact it is good to have sketchers take a Carto class, and cartographers to sketch so that each know what the other is doing Don’t try to cram too much into a single class, or even a series. Decide on what you plan to teach and tailor your plan to it

  6. Planning a Grotto Cartography Class – Inviting Members • Invite Everyone! • Try not to play favorites! This just gets someone pissed. The truth is not everone will become cartographers or generate maps, but a lot of people will have fun trying, and you may get survey personel • Invite widely • Hit message board, websites and newsletters. Try other grottos. It is a great way to link groups and youo never know who may want to join in!

  8. Planning a Grotto Cartography Class – Lesson Plan • Break it up! • Try not to teach to much! Break it into 1-1.5 hour classes. Leave time for examples and for practice • Make Good choices about seperations • Group subject together that make sense.

Have examples and sample data available before the class • Encourage people to bring their own data if they have it • Go through your presentation first – do not allow people to follow on their computer working sample data the first time through. • Then, go through the presentation a second time, slower, allowing people to work through the sample data, or their own data
