  1. RTWG Report to TAC August 6, 2009 Henry Durrwachter

  2. Report from July RTWG Meeting • Reviewed whitepaper on Wind Ramping Events (possible ways to deal with both low and high ramp rates of wind generation) – recommendation to be discussed at the August RTWG meeting. • Reviewed results of the “NERC Special Report: Accommodating High Levels of Variable Generation” and determined that all issues were covered by the TRIP with the possible exception of distributed variable generation – that issue will be added to the TRIP.

  3. Report from July RTWG Meeting • Discussed ERCOT Protocols and Operating Guide requirements for Ancillary Services with a Solar Thermal technology developer (Acciona Solar). • Reviewed ERCOT data related to capacity value of wind at peak.

  4. Capacity Value of Wind Capacity Value of Wind • ERCOT now posts hourly load and wind data for the calendar years 2006, 2007 and 2008, which includes the installed amount of wind. • At the peak load hour, the capacity value* of wind was: • 2006 = 17.6% • 2007 = 3.9% • 2008 = 11.7% • Average (2006-2008) = 11.1% • Unofficial ERCOT data for 2009 (July 8) indicates that the capacity value for wind was higher than previous years (1,610 MW out of 8,135 MW or 19.8%). *where capacity value = MW produced/MW installed

  6. Future Work • Take input from ERCOT Board on draft TRIP with the intent to finalize that document during the fall of 2009 (August 17) • Begin review of solar technologies and their impact on grid planning and operations • Presentations on solar technologies (September) • Presentation on flywheel storage technology (August or September)
