The US is marked by a severe geographic maldistribution of general pediatricians. Except for Hawaii, the 12 states with the best pediatrician-to-population ratios are in New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. The average pediatrician-to-population ratio is one pediatrician for every 1,769 children under 18 years of age. Over 70% of states fall below the national average pediatrician-to-population ratio.7
