“A Visit to Grandmother” Get into groups of 3 or 4 (if you are not clear about what you are doing, sit with someone who is). You have 15 minutes to discuss All the components of the Study Guide (1-5), especially the “ending/resolution.” the THEME of this short story and at least 3 literary elements that contribute to that theme.
“A Visit to Grandmother” The plot structure provides a clue to the central meaning because there is not “ending” or “resolution” to the story. Charles “runs away” again when he is disappointed by his relationship with his mother. Characterization is another clue to the theme. Charles is loved by his patients, and cares for people; he’s funny, too. But when he gets to GM’s he is quiet and gets angry when everyone else is laughing. Chig thinks he seems to be more like a “little boy” again. What is another one?
3rd Literary Element: Setting – the story starts out in NY where Charles is a doctor, has a nice family; he goes back to his mother’s home in the south. • The main theme of this short story is that some problems in relationships CANNOT be resolved.
