SolidWorks and PRO-ENGINEER with .STEP files and .pdf’s – What were we thinking? SW Assembly A SW Sub-Assembly A1 Part AA1 – Drawing AA1 PRO E Sub-Assembly A3 SW Sub Assembly A2 Part AA3 – Drawing AA4 Part AA1 – Drawing AA2 Part AA4 – Drawing AA4 Part AA2 – Drawing AA2 ? • For transfer RAL creates a .pdf of the drawing and a step file of the part or assembly • STEP file then has to be transferred into a SolidWorks part or assembly, checked in most if not all cases a cleaning process has to be performed • If the part is associated with an assembly, especially the suspension these parts then have to now be updated in the SW assembly. • During all of this the drawing is inaccessible! • All has to start again if something goes wrong or changes. • Red-lines can help but more often than not workshops want the CAD file to (cheaper). Starts becoming a headache to maintain. • Request for change to drawing / modification to part have to go back to RAL. • For transfer / modifying / creating a part a SolidWorks user loads it into the vault. The associated sub-assemblies and assemblies are automatically updated. • Drawing is always linked to the part available and with correct permissions both can be modified. ALL DONE BY CAD LIBRARIAN
