FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY Senior Design II Project Presentation Energy Management and Monitoring System Spring 2011 logo BLOCK DIAGRAM PROBLEM STATEMENT RESULTS • The Energy Management and Monitoring System consist of the design and implementation of a system that is capable of measuring real time power consumption in a single phase residential home or business. • The objective of the product is to allow the user to keep track of the energy used every day at home, the cost of this energy and to take control over circuit branches. • This system has been designed assuming that it will operate at indoor environment and has just a few limitations such as it is not aimed to improve the efficiency of the energy usage. • The final product has very low chances of causing accidents or having malfunctions and the components are easy to replace. • The system is considered to have minimal environmental impact. The materials and components used are considered sustainable, making this product extremely environmental and safe • The user can save energy and money. It also alerts the user when a consumption limit is reached. • The system tracks the energy consumption of a household. • It has a user friendly LCD display, it also stores data in a SD card. • The collected data is shown in a web page. This way the end user has access to the real time information. • The system has the capability of turning ON/OFF different circuit branches. • Configurable SMS alerts when maximum consumption limit has been reached. OBJECTIVES • Ease to use • • User friendly display. • • Easy to install product. • • Account registration and online user profile. • • User friendly Energy Audits. • Marketability • • Autonomous system with minimal maintenance requirements. • • Low production cost. • • Precise and reliable. • • Safe and easy installation • Functionality • • Allows accurate analysis of energy consumption. • • Remote control over designated circuits branches. • • Configurable alerts. • Displays data on LCD screen and web site (Real time online monitor). CONCEPT • This system is conformed by current and voltage sensors, a LCD display, SD card, router and an Arduino microcontroller. • The microcontroller drives a relay card which will turn ON/OFF designated circuit branches through Internet. • It uses three sensors to get the current and voltage values, these values are processed by the microcontroller to calculate power, rate, power factor, energy consumption and energy cost. • All the data is uploaded to an online server and interactive graphs are generated and embedded in the application main website. CONCLUSIONS TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS EMMS TEAM • Through this project we learned new ways to approach real engineering problems. • The final product has a high potential of getting to the market because it helps improve people’s life and economy. It also helps the planet. • Society will benefit from this product because it is a tool to keep track of the energy consumed, and it provides a platform to control outlets and utilities. • This project represented a challenge for us as students, but a great experience for our future career as engineers.
