Proposal SCENARIO: A student majoring in a related field works at a local ________________ , named “_____________”. This company does not use social media to promote their product or connect with their clientele in any capacity, but management is interested in beginning these practices. The student examines other, similar companies' uses of social media and also studies what academic and trade research says about the topic of social media as it used to promote and connect. This research results in what is called a “Backgrounder Report,” or, a report that informs an audience about a given topic related to their company. But, before the student completes the report in its entirety, the student’s boss wants to see a proposal to see if this student is capable of performing this task. [name of industry] [company]
Proposal CONTENT: Your proposal is persuasive if it can convince the reader: I) that there is a significant problem or need within the company(and that you understand it) II) that you have a method and a plan for addressing that problem or need (you have technical know-how [in this case, research capabilities] that will help address the problem or need) III) that you have the ability to manage the project successfully (you can outline what the report as a whole will look like) IV) that you are qualified to do the work (you have particular expertise or prior skill)
Proposal RESEARCH: Your proposal should touch upon research: I) What kind of research do you plan on conducting? Why? Discuss primary and secondary. II) Have you found any research sources already that are informative or persuasive? III) Do you have the necessary research capacities? From what experiences? IV) Anything else...?
Proposal STRUCTURE: Your proposal should consider the following in terms of its structure and organization: I) must be in professional memo format (see templates in PWO 3e) II) use of appropriate headings and subheadings to help the reader (i.e., your boss) better understand and digest the content III) use short, single-spaced paragraphs in this format. Almost all writing in professional contents outside of the University is single-spaced with an appropriate serif font. IV) Anything else...?
