  2. What are refugees? A refugee is a person who is outside their country of origin or habitual residence because they have suffered persecution on account of race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or because they are a member of a persecuted 'social group'.

  3. What is World Refugee Day? The United Nations' (UN) World Refugee Day is observed on June 20 each year. This event honours the courage, strength and determination of women, men and children who are forced to flee their homeland under threat of persecution, conflict and violence.

  4. Why do we celebrate this occasion? There are about 40 million people on the earth who have been removed from their homes due to issues such as the sprain on civilisations and economies from harsh transformations in climates. Roughly a third of refugees are public who have run away from their nations because of civil wars and racial, ancestral and religious brutality.

  5. World Refugee Day History. One of the most extensive proceedings is African Refugee Day as many other nations hold their own events for the worldwide known dateof June the 20th. The UN General Assembly passed a decree to state its solidarity with Africa on December the 4th 2000. the decree noted that 2001 was the 50th anniversary of the 1951 Convention connecting to the position of the refugees, and that the African Unity decided to combine International Day with it and would be further observed as World Refugee Day from 2001 onwards. This was so the concentration would be drawn more to the 14 million refugees around the world.

  6. Donate Events and Activities. The worldwide known date is used to highlight the contributions of refugees in that society. Many associations frequently get occupied in a variety of activities for the day, including: • Campaigners remonstrate against making use of prisons to hold migrants and asylum seekers. • Screenings of movies about the life styles of asylum seekers working in western nations • Association members visit imprisoned asylum seekers to give them moral support. • Notes and appeals to the government on the management of asylum seeker in custody. • Some are so passionate about the issue that devote a whole week to the event in order to comprise other ideas about the human rights for the refugees.

  7. Get Involved. Every year, people across the United States use World Refugee Day as a focus for raising awareness and funds in their own communities to gather support for different associations at work. And at the same time they spread a little understanding about the reality of being a refugee. Help us by getting involved: • Invite a former refugee to speak at your school, church, community centre, etc. and share their experiences   • Volunteer at a local refugee resettlement agency to help newly-arrived refugees in the U.S. • Host a World Refugee Day "house party" where you might show the movie “War Dance”, "Hotel Rwanda," "God Grew Tired of Us," "Beyond Borders," "I am David," or "Return to Afghanistan" or another movie that shows the plight of refugees. • Serve a dish typical in another country or prepare an international meal with friends. • Purchase Blue Keys for yourself and your friends. On World Refugee Day, June 20th, wear your keys and let everyone know how you are helping refugees.

  8. Donate. You can help save refugee lives. At UNHCR they help people find new homes and new futures through resettlement, through voluntary repatriation and through local integration. Most of the time, and where it's possible, refugees prefer to return to their home countries. Nonetheless, and with conflict continuing or escalating in many countries, finding new homes and allowing people to restart their lives is increasingly difficult. The UN Refugee Agency depends on voluntary contributions from people around the world to provide critical refugee programs around the world. By making a donation in honour of World Refugee Day, we will help highlight the plight of refugees and to advocate on their behalf.
