Education • It is believed that Euclid might have been educated at Plato’s Academy in Athens, although this is not been proven to be a fact. • He taught in a school, he founded in Alexandria, Egypt, around 300 B.C.
Euclid’s Early Life • Although he is one of the most famous mathematicians, little is known about Euclid’s early life. Records say he was born sometime between 325 B.C. to 330 B.C. • Euclid was born in Alexandria. • He is also known as Euclid Of Alexandria. He was a Greek mathematician. • There is nothing known about his family background. • The cause of his death is unknown, although the date is 285 B.C.
Accomplishments • Is known as the “Father of Geometry”. • Euclid collected many mathematicians work. • Amongst them were Hippocrates of Chios, Theudius, Theaetetus, and Eudoxus • His collection of information, led to the creation of his most influential work, Elements.
Elements • Elements contained the most basic principles of geometry. One of the most successful math textbooks. • It survived the obstacles it faced during the fall of the Roman Empire. • It was translated into Arabic. • It was reintroduced in Europe in 1120 C.E., once it was translated into Latin. • Euclid attempted to bring together all the information about Geometry known in his day, in Elements. • Thirteen books were created in this series.
Teachings • Euclid came up with 10 axioms. Which are as follow: • Definition of axiom a universally accepted principle or rule • It is possible to draw a straight line from a point to any point. • It is possible to extend a finite straight line continuously in a straight line. • It is possible to create a circle with any center and distance. • All right angles are equal to one another. • If a straight line falling on two straight lines makes the interior angles on the same side less than two right angles, the two straight lines, if produced indefinitely, meet on that side on which the angles are less than the two right angles.
Teachings (continued) • Things which are equal to the same thing are equal to each other. • If equals are added to equals, the wholes are equal. • If equals are subtracted from equals, the remainders are equal. • Things that coincide with one another are equal to one another. • The whole is greater than the part
Influence on Today • Many high schools today, still fit the teachings of Elements in their curriculum. • Its thanks to his collection of different information about Geometry, that we have the ability to learn and explore in depth more about the subject.
My Opinion • In my opinion Euclid was someone who tried to create something big, but didn’t do much. All he did was collect previous mathematicians’ information and out it together to create something bigger. I think that he didn’t do enough to deserve the name he is known for, the “Father of Geometry”. Although I guess some credit can be given because he gave it a try and he continued exploring, from what was already known.
