Freshman Student Council Q and A • What questions do you have about serving in student council at the high school?
Delegates • Will be called upon by the president and vice president of their class, as well as Head Council, to help ensure that events and fundraisers are successful. • Small number of positions (approximately 20 were recommended last year). • Applications due Friday, May 17th by 3 pm
Delegates • You will be notified if you have been chosen as a delegate by Friday, May 31 • Applications are different from officer applications • Officer candidates who wish to be delegates if they are not officers must turn in the delegate form by the due date in order to be considered.
Candidates • Offices for President, VP, Secretary, Treasurer, and Spirit Coordinators • Applications due Friday, May 10th by 3:15 pm • If approved, you will campaign May 20th through the 28th • Campaign speeches: Wednesday, May 29th (during the day) • Election will be Thursday, May 30th(during Homeroom)
President • Run individually (though you may campaign with someone) • Stay in conversation with class advisor • Plan and execute fundraisers (both short and long term). You are expected to meet the stated goals of your class advisor for each particular fundraising event. • Organize/Attend class meetings • Communicate to their peers about class events • Ensure that other officers/spirit coordinators/delegates help with Homecoming (building decorations, all night decorating, etc.)
Vice President • In short, the VP assists the president with his/her duties
Secretary • Responsible for keeping meeting minutes • In charge of taking attendance (mainly of delegates/spirit coordinators) at special events (e.g. all night decorating, meetings, etc.) • Creates monthly class calendars indicating important events and other dates-to-remember • Writes and delivers important announcements that need to be communicated to the school
Treasurer • Works closely with the advisor and the school financial secretary (i.e. Mrs. McCracken) about budgets, purchase orders and depositing money (e.g. fundraisers, ticket sales, etc.) • Communicates to the class council different financial matters
Spirit Coordinators • Run as a pair • Attend various class and full council meetings • Create posters/decorations for various school/class events • Ensure that their class is represented at school events: show SPIRIT and ENTHUSIAM!
What to do next • Secure letters of recommendation • Turn in forms and letters to Mrs. Bean (or the envelopes outside 203) • By May 10, you will be notified of eligibility • Plan your campaign
Campaigning • Campaigns will run the week of May 20 (everything should be down by May 28th at 4 pm) • Meet and Greet times will be assigned during that week • Posters are restricted to the locker area by café 1 and café 2, and the café windows. • You may not give out food or candy as part of a campaign
Campaigning • NO SOCIAL MEDIA • All materials must be approved by Mrs. Rutigliano, Mr. Catullo, Mrs. Leppla, or Mrs. Bean • These advisors have times to meet with you (see Mrs. Bean’s homework page for open times). Mr. Zaucha is available during 8th advisory to assist as well. • Videos can be used as long as it runs through proper channels
Speeches • Given on May 29, 2013. • You have two minutes for a speech (three for spirit coordinators) • Think about your platform. How will you achieve your goals? What is your vision for this class as you move into high school?
Speeches • Your speech should include, at minimum, the following information: • Who you are and the position you are seeking • Background information • Why you are seeking the position • Why are you the best candidate for the position? What qualities/strengths will help you achieve your goals?
Election Day • May 30, 2013 • Vote during homeroom • Not everyone can win! • Remember, you can still be involved
