ABSTINENCE • Not engaging in sexual intercourse • 100% effective against pregnancy and STDs • Allows couples to explore other ways of showing affection
BIRTH CONTROL PILLS • Hormonal form of contraception • Stops ovaries from releasing eggs • Prescribed by a doctor • If very careful: 97 - 99% effective against pregnancy • Taken orally everyday • No protection from STDs or HIV
DEPO-PROVERA • A Shot of artificial hormones given by a doctor • Stops ovaries from releasing eggs • If very careful: 99% effective against pregnancy • Shot last 3 months • Not protection from STDs or HIV • May cause negative side effects: weight gain, spotting, and/or hair loss
PATCH • Hormonal form of contraception • Stops ovaries from releasing eggs • Prescribed by a doctor • If very careful: 99% effective against pregnancy • Patch is placed on the skin for one week at a time for three weeks. During the forth week, no patch is worn and the woman has her period. • No protection from STDs or HIV
VAGINAL RING • Hormonal form of contraception • Stops ovaries from releasing eggs • Prescribed by a doctor • If very careful: 99% effective against pregnancy • Ring is put into the vagina, left in for three weeks, and then removed. The women will have her period during the forth week. • No protection from STDs or HIV
IMPLANON • Hormonal form of contraception • Stops ovaries from releasing eggs • If very careful: 99% effective against pregnancy • A small rod is inserted under the skin of the inside arm by a doctor and left in for three years • No protection from STDs or HIV
IUD • Small device put inside the womb by a doctor • Prevents sperm from fertilizing egg • Copper-T does not contain hormones • Mirena does contain small amount of hormones • If very careful: 99% effective against pregnancy • Last 5-10 years • Should not be used by women with multiple partners • No protection from STDs and HIV
DIAPHRAGM • Small rubber cup that fits inside the vagina, over the cervix • Used with spermicide that kills sperm • Fitted by a doctor • If very careful: 94% effective against pregnancy • Put in prior to sex and left for 6 hours after sex • No protection against STDs and HIV
STERILIZATION • Operation that makes a person unable to have a baby • Permanent • Both men and women can be sterilized • 99% effective against pregnancy • No protection from STDs or HIV
MALE CONDOM • Fits over an erect penis and catches sperm when the man ejaculates • Can buy in drug stores • Protects against STDs and HIV • If very careful: 98% effective against pregnancy • Do not use “novelty” condoms for intercourse • Why Do they break? • The condom is old (check the expiration date) • Heat and friction causes the latex to break down • Did not leave space at the tip for the fluid
FEMALE CONDOM • Placed inside of woman’s vagina prior to sex • Protects against STDs and HIV • Can be bought at drug stores • If very careful, 98% effective against pregnancy
SPERMICIDE • Chemicals that kill sperm • Put into the vagina before sex • Used in a long term committed relationship (health dept.) • Bought at drug store • If very careful, 82% effective against pregnancy • Can be used with condoms • No protection against STDs or HIV
SPONGE • The sponge is put into the vagina and covers the cervix; it kills sperm by releasing spermicide • The sponge is moistened with water • Put in prior to sex and left in for 6 hours after sex • Can be bought at the drug store • Effectiveness ranges from 75-90% against pregnancy • It can be used with other forms of contraception • No protection against STDs or HIV
MORNING AFTER PILL (PLAN B) • Can use up to 5 days after unprotected sex • The sooner it is taken, it increases the effectiveness against pregnancy • Can be bought at a drug store if a person is 18 or older • Cost: approx. 50 dollars • Side effects: headache, nausea, vomiting, irregular vaginal bleeding
