Fertilization / Development. Terms. Fertilization / Conception : Occurs when the sperm and the ova meet. Ovulation : Mature ova is released from the ovaries 14 days after the last menstruation. Sperm can live in a woman’s reproduction system for two to three days or longer.

Terms • Fertilization / Conception: Occurs when the sperm and the ova meet. • Ovulation: Mature ova is released from the ovaries 14 days after the last menstruation. • Sperm can live in a woman’s reproduction system for two to three days or longer.
Fertilization Occurs • Sperm Travels: Penis - Vagina - Uterus - Tube. • Ova is fertilized in the upper 1/3 of the fallopian tube. • Ova can only be fertilized for 12-24 hours after ovulation. • Only one sperm will fertilize the egg
Occurs (2) • Once Fertilize: The egg will travel to the uterus. During this time (3-4 days) it will be dividing. • Once in the uterus: It will be mobile for another 4-6 days before attaching to the endometrium. • PREGNANCY: Occurs when the egg attaches to the endometrium.
Fetal Development • TERMS: • Embryo: Conception to 8 weeks • Fetus: 8 weeks to birth • Amniotic Sac: membrane around the fetus that contains fluid for its protection. • Placenta: Membrane that filters out the the wastes. • Umbilical Cord: Supplies blood and nutrients to the fetus.
Developmental Defects • Define: Abnormality in the baby causing physical or mental handicap and death. • TYPES: • Metabolic: Cells not functioning • Chromosomes: Downs Syndrome • Malformations: Subtraction or addition of a body part. • Prenatal: Due to drugs and smoking
