  6. Students entering UK Universities from Nigeria Most popular courses: • Business Studies • Engineering • Computing • Medicine • Law • Social Studies

  7. Reasons for Study in the UK • Perceived quality • Status symbol • Only 6 hours away • Parents have home in the UK • Lack of places in Nigerian Universities • Security concern at some Nigerian Universities • Access to more senior posts in industry and government improved with British and US qualifications • Improved opportunities for immigration for those with foreign qualifications (HSMP)

  8. Typical family: Politicians, business owners, work in the oil & gas sectors, banking etc Children tend to proceed to the UK post secondary (15+). Parents overall reluctant to allow them leave younger. English language generally very good (minor concerns on written English) Parents mainly want boarding schools and sixth form colleges League Tables - does it really matter? A levels, Foundation & IB Sex: 50:50 (historically Northern Nigerian parents were reluctant to send female students abroad BUT this is changing now) Generally apply VERY LATE Parents prefer a ‘very secured’ environmentbecause of where they are coming from. Market characteristics

  9. Possible threats General elections in 2011 (January or April) For some institutions- managing applications from Nigerian students Increased competitor activity- US, Canada, Malaysia University Foundation Programmes!!!! Opportunities Targeting key international schools Strengthening relationships with Nigerian schools Increasing disposable income in families of professionals and commercial sectors 2011 Elections Looking ahead

  10. Success factors • The Nigerian ‘mother’- centre of key decisions • Flexibility - programs, start dates etc • Visible on ground - visits • Keep your students & families happy! • Morals, Religion - parents have a favourable view of schools that encourage religious practices • Competitive fees

  11. You can’t just: Get to the airport and pick up a taxi Walk into a hotel and check in Place adverts in newspapers and hope to get a quality audience Situate venue of your seminars anywhere - location very important Draw up your itinerary based on map - travel not very straightforward Set up a meeting by simply making a call - need to follow up We advise you should: Secure a visa before coming to Nigeria Plan ahead, plan well and follow up Always good to have a local contact name and phone number for emergencies Don’t panic - keep a sense of humour Nigeria is Different!

  12. Visa Issues • If it isn't broke why fix it? • Nigeria had the 2nd highest refusal rate after Pakistan (75%) ( currently 3rd) • For the Pre-University market the old rules worked fine. (pre tier 4 not unusual to have 98%-100% visa success rate) • New rules aimed at bogus students studying at bogus universities & schools have also had an impact on genuine students - little room for flexibility • Major hurdle is cultural practise - it is new for families to have funds sitting in an account! • Future is bright though... despite the ‘teething’ problems parents are now getting things done earlier…
