About Nigeria • The first people to arrive to Nigeria were the Nok between 500 B.C. and 200 A.D. known for their sculptures made from bronze • Nigeria was very rich in raw materials • Islam was first introduced in the 13th century • The Kanem Empire ruled until the British came in took over in 1851 and annexed Lagos • The British soon took control of the rest of the region in 1886 • Currently Nigeria has a population of over 150 million

  4. About Colonization • During this time period imperialism was large leading to colonization. Developed countries like Britain and France came into remote areas like parts of Africa and establish “colonies”. They instilled their beliefs, religion, education and ways of life into these non-developed countries. They even took over their government. By taking these countries they could access their raw materials and use them in their own countries.

  5. Why colonize? • To “civilize” countries • Have plentiful natural resources • Increase trade • Spread Christianity • Have international powers

  6. Tribes of Nigeria • Before colonization there were over 250 tribes in Nigeria each having their own language and territory • The main tribes of Nigeria were: • Hausa-Fulanis • Yoruba • Igbo. • All of these tribes were affected by colonization

What happened to the natives? • Some people were captured for slavery, but the British soon outlawed slavery • Many became influenced and intrigued by the British way of life • Many tribes of Nigeria began to fall apart • All the tribes were no clumped together, the Nigerians were being stripped of their identities and culture

  8. Pros & Cons on Colonization Loss of culture Loss of religion • Education • Modern society • Common language • Modern transportation (i.e streets, roads ect) • Government

Independent Nigeria • Nigeria finally gained independence in 1960 • Was left with a parliamentary government • January of 1966 a small group of army officers overthrew the current government and assassinated the federal prime minister and the premiers of the north and south regions • The military soon divided the four regions in 12 states

  10. Present Nigeria • Not all but some of Nigeria has gained its culture and traditions back • Economy has grown very well because of its oil and resources. Oil and gas exports account for more than 95% of export earnings and over 80% of federal government revenue.Nigeria also counts for 8% of US oil imports. • Current president is GoodluckJohnathan
