Action Verbs (AV) • refer to physical or mental actions • Examples: paint, dance, study, concentrate
Linking Verbs (LV) • Link a word in the subject to a word in the predicate • Common linking verbs= am, are, is, was, were, be, being, been • LV test: Place your finger over the verb. Does something on the right equal the subject? Can you replace the verb with =, am, are
Verb Phrases • A verb phrase means that you have more than one verb in the sentence; there are one or more helping verbs (HV) plus the main verb (MV). • Example: The sun will have disappeared. • will=HV • have=HV • disappeared= MV
Verb Phrase “tricks” • Watch out for adverb interrupters. • For example: I am not going to the dance. • “not” is an adverb interrupter. Adverbs answer when? or how? • Be sure to re-write interrogative sentences. Helping verbs often occur at the beginning of interrogative sentences. • Can you see me? can see= verb phrase
Direct Objects (DO) • Direct objects answer whom or what after action verbs. • For example: Mosquitoes eat other insects. insects= DO • There might be two DO’s in one sentence. • I saw Keri and Mike at the dance. DO’s= Keri, Mike
Indirect Objects (IO) • Indirect objects answer to whom or for whom the action was done. • I showed Denise my drawing. • drawing=DO, Denise=IO • Remember, you cannot have an IO without a DO. You can have a DO without an IO.
Transitive Verbs- 8th grade • A verb that sends its action to a noun or a pronoun in the predicate. (That noun or pronoun is a DO.) • Example: My mom bought apples at the store. Bought is a transitive verb; it is followed by the DO apples.
Intransitive Verbs- 8th grade • A verb that does not send its action to the predicate. • Linking verbs are always intransitive. • Examples: Derek is the winner.“Is” is a linking verb; therefore, it is intransitive. • She worked enthusiastically during the day. “Worked” is intransitive because it is followed by an adverb and a prep phrase- not a DO.
Simple Tenses • The simple tenses are present, past, and future. • Present- I cook dinner. • Past- I cooked dinner. • Future- I will cook dinner.
Perfect Tenses-8th grade • The perfect tenses are present perfect, past perfect, and future perfect. • Present perfect- Robert has completed his chores. • Past perfect- Robert had completed his chores before the day ended. • Future perfect- Robert will have completed his chores before the day ends.
Irregular Verbs- 8th grade • Please study your notes or pp. 125-130 in your textbook.
Predicate Nouns (PN) • Predicate nouns- are nouns in the predicate that follow linking verbs. • For example: She is my teacher. “teacher” is a PN.
Predicate Adjectives (PA) • Predicate adjectives are adjectives in the predicate that follow linking verbs. • For example: George is very handsome. “handsome” is a PA
Hints: • If an adjective precedes a PN, it is just an adjective- not a PA. • For example: Mrs. Abercrombie is my favorite teacher. “teacher” is a PN. “favorite” is an adj. that describes the PN.
Subject-Verb Agreement • A singular subject needs a singular verb. • Singular verbs end in s. • Harold needs his calculator for the test. • Harold= singular • Needs= singular verb (ends in s)
Subject-Verb Agreement • Plural subjects need plural verbs. • Plural verbs do not end in s. • The students need calculators for the test. • students=plural • need-=plural (does not end in s)
Compound subjects • Compound subjects joined by “and” always need a plural verb. Susan and Kevin study before the test. (study is plural, no s) • Compound subjects joined by “or”- the verb must agree with the nearer subject. Susan or her students study for the test. The students or Susan studies for the test.
