Introductory Caveats • There are many things about the Great Flood that I do not know or do not fully understand: >the enormity of the task of preparation >and the difficulty of trying to convince others of necessity for it. • But there are tremendous lessons to be learned from this section of scripture which are pertinent to our lives today regarding accountability, responsibility, and judgment.

Lessons from the Flood • Genesis 6:5-7 God is in Control >the extent of “man’s wickedness” is explained in vv.11-12 >the KJV’s “repented” in v.6 is unfortunate; the Heb. nachanmeans to sigh, or breath strongly, by implication, to be sorry,cf. Num.23:19 >Note especially that the enormity of man’s wickedness neither was excused, nor changed God’s mind about what was right!

Lessons from the Flood • Genesis 6:8-12 God is Just >He was unwilling to punish the righteous with the wicked; He is righteous, Psalm 19:9 >Conservative estimates are that approximately 3 billion were destroyed in the Flood, >and yet eight righteous souls were saved, cf. 7:1 with Ezk.18:20! >There was no “middle ground” of the almost righteous or the not too wicked, 1Jn.3:7ff.

Lessons from the Flood • Genesis 6:14-22 God requires Man to Work for Salvation >Many today disregard this fundamental truth. >Was it “work” to build this ark 450ft x 75ft x 45ft from raw (still standing) materials? >Was it “work” to preach “salvation in the Lord” for 120 years? cf. 6:3 >Could not God have chosen less strenuous means for salvation such as “Faith Only” to save? Sure, but He didn’t! James 2:24,26

Lessons from the Flood • Genesis 6:22(Acts 7:44 & Heb.8:5) God requires Man Build According to the Pattern >What if Noah had changed the dimensions? >Or failed to cover it outside and in with pitch? >Or not used a window, door, or three decks? Would it still have saved them? Then why would we today presume to change the pattern of salvation or worship today?

Lessons from the Flood • Genesis 7:1-7 We, like Noah, should prepare for the salvation of our families. >We cannot save the world either- all will not listen to our message of salvation. >But we should be willing to work just as hard as Noah did to try- then maybe we could save our families too! >God doesn’t require us to “build an ark”… but He does require us to use the One He built! 1Pet.3:21

  8. Take-Home Points: • Judgment came then, Genesis 7:16-23. • Judgment is coming now, 2Peter 3:3-12. • “Yes” you can live faithfully in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation- Noah did! Nine(eight + God)vs.. 3 Billion… Who won??? Are you prepared? Which side are you on?
