Digital Communication 1/13/17
Agenda • Overview of class • Qualtrics survey • Discussion of reading • Homework: • Readings (on our website) • Baron, from pencils to pixels • How Netflix reverse engineered • Blog #1 due at 8am Weds.
Course overview • Syllabus on website • Photogrammar
Qualtrics Survey • What are course goals?
Rewiring? • Carr – the way I think has changed • Hayles – “brain’s synaptic connections are coevolving with an environment in which media consumption is a dominant factor” (192).
“Power browse” • Carr – “new forms of ‘reading’ are emerging as users ‘power browse’ horizontally through titles, contents pages and abstracts going for quick wins” • Reading more, but different
Reading • Mayanne Wolf (in Carr) – “we are how we read” • Online = decoders of information
Writing • Nietzche (in Carr) – “our writing equipment takes part in the forming of our thoughts”
Intellectual Technologies • Tools that extend mental rather than physical capacities (Daniel Bell) • Internet “is subsuming most of our other intellectual technologies” • Becoming our map, clock, printing press, typewriter, calculator, telephone, radio, TV • “When the Net absorbs a medium, that medium is re-created in the Net’s image”
Google • Refines algorithms that control how people find information and extract meaning from it • “understands exactly what you mean and gives you back exactly what you want” • More clicks, more opportunities to collect your data
Knowledge consumption • “the more pieces of information we can ‘access’ and the faster we can extract their gist, the more productive we become as thinkers” • Versus “Pancake people”
Information organization • Efficiency • Categorization • Need to know structure to organize • Putting away groceries example - Wienberger
Solution = more information • “the solution to the overabundance of information is more information” (Weinberger) • This is where metadata comes in (2nd Order) • His birthday photo example • 3rd order = fully searchable • This is part of our task with Life Histories
Other Discussion Questions • With collections slowly shifting into digital databases as Weinberger describes with the Bettmann archives being uploaded by Corbis, is there still academic or cultural value in maintaining the original pictures? (Scott) • Are expert authorities going to become obsolete in the future since everyone will have the capability to find the information they specifically need? (Lacie) • What can be made of Carr’s argument that a greater reliance on technology dims an individual’s emotions and intelligence? (See his reference to 2001: A Space Odyssey) (Sarah M.)
Homework • Readings (on our website) • Baron, from pencils to pixels • How Netflix reverse engineered • Blog #1 due at 8am Weds.
