Empathy It’s not just about shoes. It’s what you do when you’re in someone else’s.
American Proverb – “Never criticize a man until you’ve walked a mile in his moccasins.”
What is empathy? • Empathy is the ability to experience the outlook or emotions of another person within oneself. • “The essence of empathy is the ability to stand in another’s shoes, to feel what it’s like there, and to care about making it better if it hurts.” Szalavitz, M. & Perry, B.D. (2010). Born for love: Why empathy is essential & endangered. New York: William Morrow, (p. 12)
Describe what you think you might know about a person wearing these shoes…
How do you show empathy? • By Listening to others intentionally to understand their experience • By Showing Compassion to others by being kind to them and doing things that show you care
“People will forget what you told them, people will forget what you did for them, but people will never forget how you made them feel”.
What is compassion? • Being genuinely concerned about another person and wanting to help or show you care • Empathy in motion – an empathic person has a generous spirit and does things to show that they care about others • Being loving, kind, and considerate of others • Helping people in need • Being kind and thoughtful towards others
What would be different if we used empathy and showed compassion to others?
It all comes down to respect.
