  2. Environmental conditions • Weather conditions in 2006 were unfavorable for development of rust • Above average temperatures with very dry to near normal precipitation occurred in the Prairie region • Only trace amounts of stem rust were found throughout the “Rust area”

  4. Virulence of Stem Rust The stem rust population is surveyed annually to detect changes in virulence that may signify the appearance of new dangerous races. Samples are collected from production fields and trap nurseries of wheat, barley, and oat in the “Rust area” of Manitoba and eastern Saskatchewan. Samples also are obtained from trap nurseries across Canada through collaborators.

  5. Virulence determination • Used standard inoculation methods and the letter nomenclature of Roelfs and Martens (1988) for wheat • Used same inoculation methods for oat, but now changed to new letter code (Fetch & Jin, 2007) adapted from Roelfs and Martens
