  1. Laurent X Julien French artist Laurent Julien has been resident Opua Bay of Islands New Zealand for the past decade, born in the South of France. Laurent developed an interest in painting from an early age, his main influences are Cezanne, Gauguin, Picasso, Vasarely and the illustrator Herge.

  2. About Laurent ‘s Op Art The first part (scientific) consists in drawing my idea on the canvas. Often my idea is incomplete and I don’t know if or how I will be able to make it work. It is often a pattern that I try to reproduce and if possible develop/evolve:(Despite it’s beauty, Vasarely art has a flaw, it is rigid, immobile, when we know that everything is always changing, evolving, decaying and born again. We have also learned, since, about quantum theory and so, to add randomness, I use a dice to choose the orientation and the hue/colour of each element in order for my painting to look more life like.) It requires, trial and experience and knowledge of mathematics, like all scientific discipline. (I come from a family where most are scientist as opposed to literary, artistic or manual type) The process is arduous often frustrating and hopeless, requiring a lot of focus and there is no reward unless I find the solution. But I like the exercise, it is better than Sudoku.

  6. Once the pattern is in place on the canvas, the second part (spiritual) begins. It is just about filling each shape with the appropriate colour (Hue and intensity). And it is where the magic begins! Because it allow me to commit the part of my brain, that usually rule the show up in my head, to the task of running, in a very precise manner, the stroke of the brush on the canvas .The brain police being busy, my thoughts can run riot. I meditate! Every thought is interesting, every possibility is worthwhile, even the seemingly impossible is considered. This brain storming lead to many discoveries, which in turn lead to originals ideas. New creations. Every painting that I realised also leads to the creation of a dozen new potential painting. I wish I could realise them all, but I can’t (not enough hands, the weeks are to short?). So I usually choose the more radical idea, the one that the furthest advanced along this evolutionary path. (Vive la difference). Voila, I am ready to start the cycle again.

  11. I paint for the love of it and in the process I exercise my logical mind by practising mathematic and geometry. I have to explore, analyse, understand, replicate and create. I then get to explore my mind, while training my brush-stroke skills and improving my understanding of colours and their relationship.
