AMP= adenosine monophosphate • ADP = adenosine diphosphate • It takes energy to add each phosphate. Lots of energy required to bind a third phosphate. Why? • Energy is available for work when ATP ADP
ATP ADP, energy released Cell proteins have binding sites for ATP. Released energy is used for cellular work ADP is released from binding site to be recharged
ATP is the cell’s energy currency. • Energy needed at the molecular level • Make proteins • Move ions against a concentration gradient • Building cell membranes and organelles • Maintaining homeostasis
