  4. The Alliance System • Built out of fear and distrust of other nations Central Powers: Germany & Austria-Hungary Triple Alliance: Germany, Austria-Hungary, & Italy Vs. The Allies / Triple Entente: Russia, Britain, & France (and eventually Italy & the U.S.)

  5. Death of Archduke Ferdinand • Key Date: June 28 • 1389 – Serbia conquered by the Ottomans • 1912 – Serbia gains independence from the Turks • 1914 – Archduke Ferdinand and his wife visit Sarajevo • Heir to the Austria throne is killed by Gavrilo Princip, member of the Black Hand, a Serbian terrorist group that hoped to build a Southern Serbian state.

  6. Austria-Hungary’s Ultimatum • Francis Joseph blames Serbia for Heir’s death  wants to punish Serbia. • Sets an ultimatum for Serbia • Asks Germany if she will assist in war against Serbia if Serbia fails to meet obligations

The Schlieffen Plan • Germany feared fighting a war on both the eastern and western sides of its country at the same time. • Believed it would take Russia longer to mobilize its troops • Plan: Defeat France quickly; then, fight Russia • To make this work, the German’s invaded neutral Belgium  Britain enters the war
