INTRODUCTION TO THE BASICS: Using Filters • This workbook includes filters for year, subject, grade level, subgroup, and comparison set filters. • Filters take the following forms: drop down menu, radio buttons, slider bars. • Use the controls to filter all the visuals on a given dashboard.
INTRODUCTION TO THE BASICS: Using Maps • This workbook includes a number of maps that can be used for highlighting and filtering. • To select a school or county using the map simply click on that school or county. • To select multiple schoolsor counties, you can hold down the ctrl keyand select any number of schools and counties or click and drag your mouse over a section of the map.

USING YOUR DASHBOARDS:NMUSD Schools: CST results, ELA and Math Observation: The top three schools in the district for English language arts in 2012 were also the top three schools in the district for math.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS:Similar Schools: CST Results, ELA and Math Observation:In both English language arts and math, white students at California Elementary ranked just below the median of similar schools in California. Hispanic students, however, ranked slightly above the median on the ELA CST but scored in the lowest quintile on the math CST relative to Hispanic students at similar schools.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Similar Schools: Grade Five Math/Science Results Observation: Victoria Elementary was top ranked among similar elementary schools in both fifth grade math and science in 2008. Since 2008 it has dropped to the lowest quintile in math and below the median in science.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Similar Schools: Grade Level Comparison Observation:In 2012, Adams’ second, third, fifth and sixth graders performed above the median of their similarity set in English Language Arts. Adams’ fourth graders performed significantly below the median.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Year-to-Year Change in CST Results Observation: In 2012, after three straight years of declining math scores, Adams Elementary had the greatest increase in percentage of students scoring proficient or better in math relative to its similarity set. Hispanic students scoring proficient or better increased by 16 percent, more than reversing the previous three years’ decrease.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: High-End Goal Setting: CST Outcomes Observation:In 2006, five schools similar to Kaiser achieved at the same level or below Kaiser on the math CST. When Kaiser’s performance started to dip after 2009, these five similar schools continued to improve their math scores. Observation:Kaiser’s performance on the Math CST peaked in 2009. This same downward trend in math scores is true for every grade level at Kaiser with the exception of third grade.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Low-End Goal Setting: CST Outcomes Observation:In 2010, after three straight years of decrease, Newport Heights achieved the lowest percentage of students in the bottom two proficiency bands in English Language Arts. Since 2010, five (or 1/3) of Newport Heights’ similar schools were able to continue to reduce the number of students in the bottom two proficiency bands while Newport Heights experienced a slight increase in the percentage of students performing in these bands.
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Detail of Advanced and Proficient CST Results Observation: Anderson Elementary has achieved a high ratio of advanced-to-proficient fourth grade students in English Language Arts (6.1 : 1) . The same ratio in math for fourth graders is significantly lower, with about an equal number of students scoring proficient as advanced (1.2 : 1).
USING YOUR DASHBOARDS: Detail of Below and Far Below Basic CST Results Observation:Since 2006 in English language arts, Pomona Elementary has not only decreased the percentage of students scoring in the bottom two proficiency bands by 22% but has reduced the ratio of far below basic to below basic students.
