SOE C & C Committee recommends approval of the following motions • Motion 1: “Approve the replacement of BME 221 in the BME minor portion of the Catalog with the BME 220” • Motion 2: “Approve the changes to the MSE major program and add CHEG 3156 (CHEG 256) as a course that can be taken to fulfill the MSE minor” • Motion 3: “Approve new minor in Nanotechnology” offered initially by ECE Dept • Motion 4: “Approve the changes to the ECE major program” • Motion 5: “Approve the change to ME 3260 from a W course only to a non-W course as well”
Expanded C & C Initiative Report Marty Wood
Committee’s Charge • How are we delivering the fundamental competencies of “the Engineer of 2010” • Review the FIRST year courses for purpose, content, delivery styles, experiential learning, etc. and make recommendations • Increase freshmen to sophomore promotion rate.
Physics/Chemistry subcommittee recommendations • Require entering students to have both HS Chemistry and Physics not just one or the other • Retain the current topics covered in Eng Physics I and II. • Increase the laboratory portions of both courses to a minimum of 25% if not 30% of the final grade
CSE 123C subcommittee recommendations • Objectives: • To provide a level of computing skills that can be built upon each semester, resulting in graduates who are proficient in the use computers in their discipline. • To change the current culture, so that engineering students further develop these computational skills by solving problems in their technical courses.
CSE 123C subcommittee recommendations • Increase the credits for this course to 3-credits by increasing the computer lab time to 2-hours and retaining the two 1-hour lectures. • Use an engineering-oriented programming language and environment (MATLAB). • Have assignments in the class be programming for math, engineering, and science applications.
CSE 123C subcommittee recommendations • Obtain representative word problems from departments and knowledge required for second semester courses (i.e. ENGR 166, MEM 151, ECE 110, & CSE 133) • Administer a survey at the end of the course • Offer as pilot in Spring 09 • Based on pilot, implement fully in Fall 09
ENGR 100, 166, MEM 151, ECE 110 subcommittee recommendations • Enhance ENGR 100 by: • Including alumni as presenters describing the disciplines and their experiences • Have students visit departmental laboratory courses as well as departmental demos as in the past • Add two new modules from FYE curricular • Stress Management • Health and Wellness
ENGR 100, 166, MEM 151, ECE 110 subcommittee recommendations • Introduce design element topics to experiential learning projects • Have 4-5 simultaneous program workshops for students describing our programs and answering questions (DH or designated rep) • Retain several of the current modules: Time Management, Study Skills, Problem Solving, Goal Setting, Ethics, Academic Misconduct, etc.
ENGR 100, 166, MEM 151, ECE 110 subcommittee recommendations • Investigate options to have student groups connected/associated with upper division students (similar to the Uconnect Program) • Administer an exit survey to assess the effectiveness of the course
