2. BCC Vision Statement We are an open and affirming Christian community that is committed to sharing
the unconditional love of Christ
by serving others with
compassion, integrity, moral courage,
divine discipline and intelligent faith.
3. Intro The Holy Spirit is the 3rd person in the Trinity
God the Father – Creator
Jesus the Son – Redeemer
Holy Spirit – Sustainer
Holy Spirit is the life generating energy of God
4. Intro Cannot separate the actions or behavior of God, from the action of Jesus and Holy Spirit do
Always act together
Always in sync
They are not identical but one is never without the other
God cannot be God without Jesus being the Redeemer and the Holy Spirit being the Sustainer
5. Intro Holy Spirit is what moves us into communion with God and with others
So when we use “Spirit-talk” that discounts or denigrates the existence of others
People we don’t like, “sinners”
People we think are “other”
Other life styles
Other faith traditions
Other races or nationalities
6. Intro When we say things or do things to the people in the “other” group that discounts their humanity
Then we DO NOT behave in the Spirit of God
Augustine says the Holy Spirit is the energy or life force of God
Love that binds
7. Intro Migliore says the Father Son & Holy Spirit are so intimately united that they “indwell” each other in a “society of love”
The Spirit is the uniting love of the Trinity, the power of community in diversity, of mutual love and friendship
Our mission on earth is to figure out how we can love God, & ourselves this way & then share this love with others
8. Intro Because the Father, Son & Spirit are eternally relational – never a time when they are not dynamically relating to each other
And since we were created in the image of God
We were created to be in relationship with God & with each other
We are called to dance like God dances – always in sync, never in competition, always equal, always reciprocal
9. Galatians 5:16-23 16My counsel is this: Live freely, animated and motivated by God’s Spirit. Then you won’t feed the compulsions of selfishness.
17For there is a root of sinful self-interest in us that is at odds with a free spirit, just as the free spirit is incompatible with selfishness. These two ways of life are antithetical, so that you cannot live at times one way and at times another way according to how you feel on any given day.
18Why don’t you choose to be led by the Spirit and so escape the erratic compulsions of a law-dominated existence?
10. Galatians 5:16-23 19It is obvious what kind of life develops out of trying to get your own way all the time: repetitive, loveless, cheap sex; a stinking accumulation of mental and emotional garbage; frenzied and joyless grabs for happiness;
20trinket gods; magic-show religion; paranoid loneliness; cutthroat competition; all-consuming-yet-never-satisfied wants; a brutal temper; an impotence to love or be loved; divided homes and divided lives; small-minded and lopsided pursuits;
21the vicious habit of depersonalizing everyone into a rival; uncontrolled and uncontrollable addictions; ugly parodies of community. I could go on. This isn’t the first time I have warned you, you know. If you use your freedom this way, you will not inherit God’s kingdom
11. Galatians 5:16-23 22But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments,
23not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely. Legalism is helpless in bringing this about; it only gets in the way.
12. Fruits of the Spirit Your relationship with Jesus, your love affair with God should result in the fruits of the Spirit
love, joy, peace, patience,
kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness and self-control
Fruits of spirit = by product or evidence or proof that we live by the Spirit, that Spirit indwells in us
13. Love God asks us to love one another with agape love, unconditionally
It’s a “just because” love
Not based on what person can do for you
You love in spite of who person is
You look beyond flaws & see possibilities
(Love) always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres (1Cor 13:7)
14. Joy Joy is the appropriate response to the Good News of Jesus Christ
Joy is the response we should have when we realize thru Jesus Christ that God loves us so much that God refuses to go thru eternity without us
Joy is a DECISION we make to be ecstatic about the fact that we are in a relationship with an all loving God, in spite of our circumstances
15. Peace Is the sense of serenity we experience when we realize that whatever we’re going thru
Its just a moment in time
My right now is not my always
I won’t be going thru this, suffering with this, tolerating this in eternity
Is rising above my circumstances
16. Patience Patience – not so easily frustrated or angered,
Make allowances for the shortcomings of others bc you are so grateful that JC makes allowances for you
17. Faithfulness Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen
What does that mean:
You treat the not yet as if it’s right now,
the unseen as if you’ve already been there, done that, and have the t-shirt & mug to prove it!
18. Faithfulness It’s the kind of faith that is under girded in who God is, not in who you are
It’s the kind of trust in God that is based:
Not on reasonable doubt
Not on the preponderance of evidence
But on the truth, the whole truth & nothing but the truth, that Jesus Christ is Lord
19. Gentleness & Self-Control Gentleness: not weakness but power under control
Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love (Eph. 4:2)
Learn how to control our emotions & our tongues!
Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark.
The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell (James 3:5-6)
20. What Kind of Fruit Do Your Relationships Bear? Why is it so hard to invite the Holy Spirit into our relationships
What areas do you need to work on so that the Holy Spirit can indwell in you & your relationships?
What are you willing to do differently, TODAY?!
