  2. Background Twitter began in 2006 by Jack Dorsey In 2012 there were over 500 million registered users who posted over 340 million “tweets” per day and made 1.6 billion search queries per day It is one of the 10 most visited websites in the United States, and the 11th most visited globally

  3. Why Do People Use Twitter? Twitter is “the fastest, simplest way to stay close to everything you care about.” Twitter can act as your RSS feed (keeps all the websites you surf in one place). Helps you keepup with friends, events, news, and popular culture. Networking and finding jobs. Build your businessor organization, advertise. Finding answers to questions. Entertainment.

  5. Registered Twitter users compose “tweets.” Tweets are messages posted via Twitter. Tweets must be 140 characters or less.

  6. When you tweet, you can utilize the following mechanics: Hashtags, RTs (retweets), MTs (modified tweets), DMs (direct messages), Replies, Mentions and more.

  8. When creating your library Twitter account, everything should reflect your organization’s “brand.”

  9. Establish your organization’s brand/tone. • Social networking with your users and local organizations. • Keep patrons up to date on library events, programs and new resources. • Give tips on using your library’s tools and resources, or link to guides and indexes. • Market the library’s resources. • Post pictures and videos of people enjoying and using your collection, partaking in events and guest speakers. People will want to get in on the fun, too! • See Twitter as an extension of your organization’s customer service. Interact with patrons, respond to all questions, thank them for retweeting you, reach out! Ways to Use Twitter in a Library Context:

  11. Make sure your users know you have a Twitter account! Add Twitter links to your websites and publication materials.
