  2. Look at these words and listen to me read them out loud: invaluable reorganization Remember, some words are made up of a root or root word plus a prefix and a suffix. Identify the prefix and suffix in each word. The prefix in invaluable is in and the suffix is able. The prefix in reorganization is re and the suffix is tion. What is the root or root word in these two words? Turn and tell your partner. Give a thumbs up if you said the root words are value and organize.

  3. When looking at longer words, remember… • Looking for prefixes, root words, and suffixes can help you break longer words into syllables. • The prefix forms the first syllable of the word. • The suffix forms the last one or two syllables of the word.

  4. Look at this chart. Identify the prefix, suffix, and root word in each longer word. Decode each word part and then read the longer word. re- establish ment in- dispense able il- logic al dis- comfort ing

  5. Independent Practice Look through your independent book or social studies book for words that contain a prefix, a root or root word, and one or more suffixes. Create a chart like the one on the previous slide to record and analyze the words you find (find at least 4 words).
