Adapting for Survival 8th Science Mr. Lund
What is adaptation? • Adaptation is any characteristic an organism has that makes it better able to survive in its environment • Animals live in habitats which give them food and shelter and allow them to mate.
What type of animals adapt? • All animals, including humans, must adapt in order to survive. • Animals that do not adapt will become extinct. • Adapting includes finding a habitat that will increase the chance of survival.
Why is it important for animals to adapt? • The environment is always changing and animals that do not adapt will be naturally removed. • Once a species becomes extinct, it is gone for good. • Some animals adapt so that they are able to survive both on land and in water.
Are there animals that haven’t adapted? How do we know? • Dinosaurs, dodo birds, and the Carolina parakeet, among others, have become extinct because of their failure to adapt. • The Siberian tiger and California condor are in danger of becoming extinct because of their lacking ability to adapt.
Animals must continue to adapt! • The environment is continually changing and all animals must change with it. • Animals that fail to change their behaviors will ultimately die out.
