Rainforest biodiversity I picked the rainforest because I wanted to learn more about the environmental factors, and to show you what I learned.
Green house gases A rainforest absorbs a large amount on carbon dioxide. Each year humans cut down a large amount of trees in the rainforest which is referred to as deforestation. With less trees and plants in the rainforest means there will be a higher percentage of carbon dioxide in the earths atmosphere.
Global Warming As the global warming in the world rises, researchers found that the amount of carbon dioxide in rainforest has increased 30% in the last 200 years. Plants use the Co2 from the air for photosynthesis.Scientist suspect that the rise in CO2 levels are fertilizing the rainforest and increasing the competition for light, water and nutrients in the soil. Which means the big fast growing trees have a better advantage and are outpacing the smaller ones. This is an odd change in the rainforest.
Acid rain Acid rain is a mixture of wet And dry deposition material from the atmosphere containing higher then normal amount of nitric and sulfuric acids. Acid rain is found in the rain forest. It destroys trees and other plant life. It is very bad fore the environment. When acid rain falls in the rainforest in can cause the plant and trees to grow slower too. Although acid rain cant kill humans it can kill some of the smaller animals in the rainforest.
Ozone layer The ozone layer is a layer that covers the earths atmosphere. It protects us from the suns UV rays. As some of the rainforest is getting cut down some people think this will affect the ozone layer. The rain forest has no affect on the ozone layer.
Relationships mutualism commensalism Mutualism is when both organisms benefit. Example of a mutualism relationship in the rainforest would be: a wood pecker pecking the insects out of a tree. The wood pecker benefits because it gets food the tree benefits from the insects not being able to eat it away. So in the end both organisms benefit. Commensalism is between two organisms. Its when one organism benefits and the other is neutral. Example of commensalism relationship in the rainforest would be: a beetle lives on a sloth because the sloth carries algae which is what the beetle eats. The beetle benefits by getting food from the sloth, the sloth doesn’t really benefit anything so its neutral.
Predator prey relationship Predator- prey relationship is when an organism eats another. Example of a predator- prey relationship in the rainforest would be: A Red –Eyed Tree Frog eats flies flying by. The predator is the Red-Eyed Tree Frog and the prey is the flies.
