Objectives • To combine qualitative views with quantitative analysis in a single report on diabetes care • To produce an audit of the political promises made about diabetes • To use new technology to get people involved in campaigning • To position Diabetes UK as the only independent voice of the diabetes community
Background • Hansard Society and All Party Parliamentary group ran initial event during 2004 • Over 300 people took part • Engaged politicians • However: did not have any context to support the final report; follow up activity was not planned; only covered England
Diabetes Dialogue 2006 • On-line forum running from 25/9 – 30/10 • Themed around our priorities: structured education; paediatrics; retinopathy; early detection; and, psychological support • Promoted across four nations • Lead comments from people with diabetes as well as health professionals
Services audit • Final report will combine qualitative views and quantitative data • Using data from Diabetes UK’s own research, research by Dr Foster done on our behalf and available government data • Behind the report will be a database of what is going on across the four nations broken down by region
Promoting participation • Marketed to our own members via events and publications • Letters to every local newspaper editor in the country • Mailing to MPs • Promoted at the party political conferences • Promoted by Hansard Society • Ongoing promotion to local networks • 250 people registered in the first week
Using the report • Launch at the House of Commons December 2005 • Media launch centred on Diabetes UK’s view on care across the UK • Involve MPs in what is going on in their area • Central tool in our campaigning – develop key asks and follow through with ministers • Annual event – but developed each year to ensure it still captures the imagination
